Six STOP SHOP retail centres in Serbia – in Smederevo, Zaječar, Leskovac, Šabac, Borča and Požarevac – are protected against lightning strikes with Hermi lightning protection components.
To safeguard the buildings and the photovoltaic systems installed on their roofs, 5 kilometres of Hermi round conductor, more than 1,600 SON17 C roof conductor fasteners and 275 LOP air-termination rods of various heights were installed. The investor selected BS PROJEKT from Valjevo, an experienced contractor for electrical and other building installations, while Hermi provided the technical solution and the complete set of required components.
As part of the lightning protection system design, the project team analysed the geometry of each retail centre, the type of roof covering, the layout of the photovoltaic modules and their mounting systems, as well as other roof-specific characteristics. Based on these parameters, they defined the configuration of the air-termination, down-conductor and earthing parts of the lightning protection system. In places where it was not possible to ensure adequate separation or clearance distances, an insulated lightning conductor was used.
For the installation of the lightning protection system, almost 5,000 metres of round aluminium conductor with a diameter of 8 mm (90250) were laid across all six locations. The wire is routed over the flat roof surfaces and along the sheet-metal parapets, and then further down the façade to the earthing system. Hermi RH1 stainless flat lightning conductor (90701) is used as the earthing conductor.
At six STOP SHOP locations, 5,000 m of round conductor, 1,615 SON17 C fasteners, and 275 LOP air-termination rods were installed.
On the flat roofs, 1,615 SON17 C roof conductor (117227) used together with concrete blocks (41) were installed for routing the round conductor. The SON17 C roof conductor fasteners are suitable for flat roofs with bitumen or similar waterproofing membranes, as they allow installation without drilling or penetrating the roof membrane. The conductor is secured into the fastener using a simple click-in system, which enables quick installation while ensuring adequate mechanical stability.
Hermi SON16 fasteners were used for the vertical routing of the conductor on the sheet-metal façade.
For routing the lightning conductor along the sheet-metal parapets, nearly 2,300 SON04 A roof conductor fasteners (426) were installed. In the vertical section of the lightning protection system, where the conductor is routed down the sheet-metal façade towards the earthing system, SON16 fasteners (11622) were used. The round conductor is mechanically secured in these fasteners by means of screw fastening.
In the air-termination part of the lightning protection system, 275 LOP air-termination rods of various heights (300503, 300504, 300505, 300506) were installed. Depending on the height of each rod, one or more concrete bases were used, together with the appropriate fixing kits and spacer elements. For example, the 5-metre LOP5.0 rods (300505) were installed using a three-leg support system consisting of three LOP-PB1/M8 concrete bases (301493) with PBP350 protective base plates (301490) and the LOP-P03 fixing kit (300503), which is suitable for LOP3.0, LOP4.0 and LOP5.0 rods. This configuration ensures the mechanical stability of the air-termination rods. For the installation of the 3-metre LOP3.0 rods (300503), LOP-PB2/M16 concrete bases (301492) were used together with PBP350 protective base plates (301490).
The stability of the 5-metre LOP5.0 air-termination rod is ensured by a three-leg support system consisting of LOP-PB1/M8 concrete bases and the LOP-P03 attachment kits.
Most cases, installing a 3-metre LOP3.0 air-termination rod requires only one Hermi LOP-PB2/M16 concrete base with a PBP350 base plate.
In certain areas where the layout of the photovoltaic modules, metal structures or other installations did not allow the required separation distances to be maintained, an isolated system was implemented. The use of the ISVH insulated conductor (100119) compensates for the required separation distance and thus prevents dangerous sparking or flashover to metallic parts or equipment, avoiding possible damage or destruction. As part of the isolated system, insulated air-termination rods LOP3.0 I (301582) were also installed. For routing the insulated conductor across the flat roof, SON17 C roof conductor fasteners (117227) were used together with the dedicated SON17 concrete block (40), into which the ISVH SON16 (90268) holder is screwed. The insulated lightning protection conductor is then fixed to this holder using screws.
For the isolated system, the Hermi ISVH insulated conductor, LOP3.0 I air-termination rods and the corresponding components were used.
Various Hermi clamps and other contact elements were used for making the connections. Among them is the stainless-steel KON04 A SIMPLE bonding clamp (50522), which is designed for creating above-ground joints between round conductors Ø8–Ø10 mm and metal parts. Clamps KON02 (40122), KON07 (40611) and KON08 (50111) were also used.
A properly designed and installed lightning protection system provides adequate protection for both the building and the photovoltaic power plant, as it reduces the risk of mechanical damage, electrical installation failures or fire in the event of a lightning strike. At the STOP SHOP retail centres in Serbia, the Hermi lightning protection system makes an important contribution to the operational reliability of the facilities by reducing the likelihood of outages, infrastructure damage or temporary closure of the centres due to atmospheric discharges. As a result, the retail centres can operate without interruptions, while ensuring a high level of safety for both people and property, even in stormy conditions.
