Logistics centre Lidl Križ

This year, Lidl opened its largest logistics and distribution centre in Croatia near Zagreb. Lidl engaged the company KAMGRAD d.o.o. to build the project, which included a comprehensive lightning protection system using Hermi components.
This ambitious project represents a significant investment of €120 million and covers a vast area equivalent to 25 football pitches. The state-of-the-art facility is designed to increase Lidl's operational efficiency in Croatia.
The process of implementing the lightning protection system for the building was meticulously planned and executed. Site surveys and risk assessments helped determine the optimal layout of the earthing and other lightning protection elements. The specific construction and operational needs of the warehouse were taken into account in the design. The system reliably discharges electrical current in the event of a direct lightning strike, ensuring the complete safety of the building and protecting the assets inside.
The SON17 C roof fasteners allow fast installation without penetrating the roofing or using special tools.
At the outset, it was crucial to plan the entire protection system thoroughly, considering environmental factors, the size of the building, construction materials, and the layout of the lightning protection system. Proper earthing and the adequate selection of materials were essential. KAMGRAD d.o.o. used more than 40,000 meters of stainless steel flat conductor to install the earthing system, forming its backbone. Additionally, over 15,000 meters of round aluminium lightning conductor with a diameter of 8 millimetres were used for lightning protection. Expansion elements (90213) were installed to compensate for the temperature expansion of the lightning conductors, in line with recommendations for conductors longer than 20 meters.

More than 360 Hermi LOP2.5 air-termination rods (300512) were installed as part of the external lightning protection. These rods are specially designed to protect air-conditioning units, light domes, and other roof elements that cannot be effectively safeguarded by traditional lightning conductors.

More than 15,000 Hermi SON17 C roof fasteners with concrete blocks (117237) are positioned on the roof, supporting and distributing the round lightning conductor. Hermi SON17 C roof fasteners are suitable for flat roofs covered with bitumen, gravel or synthetic membrane. They allow cost-effective and quick installation without the use of special tools and without penetrating, drilling or screwing into the roofing itself.

For the joints, the contractor used more than 1,200 Hermi KON04 a SIMPLE bonding clamps (50522). The stainless steel clamps, designed for making joints between round conductors Φ8-Φ10 mm and sheet metal parts above ground, allow quick and easy installation with just one screw. The clamps consist of two 40 mm x 40 mm plates and an M10 screw.
Additionally, over 960 KON33 fixed earthing terminals (connecting plate only with M10/M12 thread) were used for potential equalization, which is key to maintaining an even electrical potential throughout the facility. An identical number of KON31 clamps with threaded screws were used, enhancing the safety and overall efficiency of the system.

The lightning protection system ensures uninterrupted operation even in harsh weather conditions, reducing or eliminating the consequences of a lightning strike, such as fire, mechanical damage to the building, and damage or destruction of the warehouse inventory and merchandise.
