In Trebinje, the southernmost city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a new hospital is under construction that will make an important contribution to healthcare in the wider region. One of the key requirements for this strategic facility, worth over €60 million, is reliable lightning protection. Proven Hermi lightning protection components were used, and the installation was carried out by Segment d.o.o., a local company from Trebinje.
The new hospital, located in the village of Pridvorci in Trebinje, will have an operational area of approximately 17,500 square metres once completed. It is designed to accommodate 281 in-patient beds and will include an emergency block, diagnostic wards, and a daycare hospital. The facility will be equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology, making it highly sensitive to power surges. Therefore, lightning protection was considered a safety-critical component from the design stage.
The Hermi lightning protection system protects the new Trebinje hospital from lightning strikes.
Hermi elements which comply with EN 62561 standard have been used for the design and construction of the lightning protection system. The complete system is designed to effectively intercept lightning strikes, conduct current through the discharge system to earth and provide equipotential bonding for the protection of people, equipment and structures.
The air-termination and down-conductor systems consist of more than 1,500 metres of aluminium conductor.
The earth-termination system includes more than 3,600 metres of Hermi stainless steel flat conductor (90701), installed in the concrete foundation and around the building's perimeter. Approximately 720 KON09 (90122) clamps were used for connections to the reinforcement, and more than 520 KON01 (50422) clamps were used for joints between flat conductors. In addition, 200 metres of RH5 (90160) Ø10 mm stainless steel round conductor were used. Installers used 80 KON02 (40122) clamps to make measuring and other joints between the round and flat conductors both in the ground and above it.
The air-termination and down-conductor systems consist of more than 1,500 metres of AH1 aluminium conductor with a diameter of Ø8 mm, installed on the roof, along the roof edges, and down the building façade to the ground. Approximately 120 Hermi KON08 (50111) stainless steel clamps were used to secure the contact joints between the round conductors.
Aluminium LOV air-termination tips are mounted at the ends of the air-termination conductors.
More than 100 potential lightning strike points were identified on the roof. At the ends of the air-termination conductors, aluminium LOV air-termination tips are mounted to effectively intercept the lightning current and redirect it to the earthing system.

Given the architectural diversity of the roof, various supporting elements were used for fastening the lightning conductors. Over 970 SON04 A stainless steel fasteners (426) were installed at the edges of the sheet metal attics. At the ridge, the round conductor was positioned and fastened using the SON16 ridge fasteners (11621) click system. On the flat sections with bitumen roofing, SON17 BB roof fasteners (117226) with a click system were used, allowing for easy installation without damaging the waterproofing layer. The down-conductor system was completed using stainless steel wall screws ZON01 (20122), suitable for hollow walls with insulation, and ZON03 (20322), suitable for solid walls.
To protect small air-conditioning units, light domes, or other rooftop elements that cannot be effectively covered by standard lightning conductors, LOP3.0 air-termination rods (300503), LOP-PB2/M16 concrete bases (301492), and PBP350 protective mats (301490) were used. LOP-"I" DIST distance elements (301506) were also used to properly position and stabilize the air-termination rods.
Adequate lightning protection in critical infrastructure such as hospitals is essential. A direct lightning strike can damage the building, start a fire, or indirectly ignite flammable substances (e.g. oxygen tanks), as well as destroy sensitive medical equipment. Surges can disable critical systems and interrupt life-saving procedures.
